Lynn R. Szabo Endowed Award:
MATCHING GIFT OPPORTUNITY: Lynn R. Szabo Endowed Award
The Lynn R. Szabo Endowed Award has been created by the Lermitte family, whose wish is to honour the legacy and inspiration that Lynn established throughout her career at Trinity Western University. Lynn is a distinguished scholar of the poet, mystic, and political activist Thomas Merton, an emerging and significant figure in twentieth-century American literary studies. She is a published poet and taught creative writing courses in the English department throughout her tenure.
“This is part of our family legacy—our commitment to service, to giving back, to honouring God through the resources He has given us. We hope that this matching gift will support students in the humanities, specifically, and provide opportunities for a liberal arts education to make a difference wherever students end up living and working. We hope that humanities students will be equipped with excellent critical thinking skills, will build and deepen their social skills and relationships, and will be enriched by examining the histories and beliefs of others and themselves. Ultimately, we believe that the humanities offer important perspectives in discussions that are often polarized and/or intolerant—the humanities play an important role in society. We hope that other people will join us in supporting this initiative,” shared the Lermitte family.

N.B.:
Lynn officially retired and was celebrated by students, faculty and family on September 11, 2014. She continues to work with graduate students and supervise theses, and in addition to her own publishing and scholarly interests, she conducts writing and spiritual retreats.
Professor Lynn Szabo Atrium and Meeting Room:
The RNT and SNC buildings at Trinity Western University underwent a makeover over the past two summers. Where there used to be a flat roof between the two buildings, there now exists a lovely atrium and lounge area connecting the second floor. In addition, there is a beautiful meeting room (below). They are special spaces for academic and student meetings, events, and retirement and graduation celebrations and teas. Both the meeting room and atrium below were furnished by alumni donors in honour of Prof. Lynn Szabo’s contribution to the university.
